Filter Description

A drinking water filter is a tool used to remove impurities from water via fine physical barrier, chemical process or biological process. Although it is generally used to provide safe and clean drinking water for people, other things can also benefit such as irrigation, swimming pools and aquariums. There are different types of drinking water filters. Filtration is a very important process in treating drinking water systems. Before water can be distributed to consumers and homes, the supplier should filter it well.

Additional filtration can be done by consumers in their own homes using available domestic water filter types. Domestic water filters function to take away chemicals and metals such as lead and chlorine which are present in untreated water. Eliminating these will prevent disease and contamination, boost health, improve the appearance, taste, color and odor of the water. These materials can be attached to a domestic water tank or supply before the tap, directly to a tap, in a portable unit or at the point of use.

The Types

Drinking water filters come in different types using different process. All these however, have the same function of getting rid of chemicals, metals and other wastes for maximum health benefits and safety. Drinking water filter physics is based on ion exchanges, adsorption, sieving, etc. Filters can remove smaller particles compared to screens or sieves.

In the home, GAC or granular activated carbon filters, CBR or carbon block resin, microporous ceramic filters, metallic alloy filters and ultrafiltration membranes are some of the most commonly used. There are composite systems using two or more filter technologies. Jugs and kettles may also be equipped to reduce limescale effects.

More water filter types for plants include media filters, disk filters, rapid sand filters, slow sand filter beds, screen filters and cloth filters. Portable water filters are helpful for a variety of groups and organizations which include a mechanical hand pump or siphon drip system to force the water through. The Filter Working

Drinking water filters work through a variety of processes. Mechanical filtration provides excellent quality drinking water by letting water pass through a graded density pre-filter trapping sand, dirt and other particles that change the look, taste and odor of the water. The water further passes through a very compact solid carbon block for direct mechanical interception of particles. Cysts, turbidity and asbestos are can be reduced at the sub-micron level.

Electrokinetic adsorption involves getting a positive molecular charge as water passes through the graded density prefilter. Media fibers electrokinetically attract very small charged colloidal particles to avoid a negative charge in solution by colloidal contaminants. Physical adsorption involves a very compact carbon block filter media composed of selected activated carbons and other materials that minimize aesthetic and health-related contaminants. The contaminants are then adsorbed such as lead, mercury, VOCs, chlorine, chloramines and PCBs.
