Is AquaTru the Best Countertop Water Filtration System?

My family has used the AquaTru Water Filtration System for just over a year. The water that comes from it is very smooth and easy to drink. It taste better than bottled water which often has almost a plastic weird taste to it. I been using a distiller before this because I live in Las Vegas and the water is 450 part per million of particles out of the tap.

What is Reverse Osmosis Technology?

The amount of people that still purchase bottled water for home use never ceases to amaze me. Come on people, it's time to get educated here. You are wasting time and energy, landfill space, and yes, money.. Lots of it!.

In the United States, Reverse Osmosis water filters are some of the most common household filtration systems available. Reverse osmosis water filters are an extremely effective form of filtration. They are used in military installations where clean water isn't readily available. They are able to filter a wide range of contaminants, including lead.

The system consists of a sediment filter to trap particles like calcium carbonate and urea. It also filters silt, rust and sand that affect the taste and appearance of water.

A second sediment filter with smaller pores helps trap smaller impurities. A carbon filter traps organic chemicals, chlorine, heavy metals, asbestos and fluorides. A wide range of volatile organic compounds including many pesticides and herbicides are also removed. A reverse osmosis filter is made up of a semi permeable membrane.

The membrane is a thin film composite. The microscopic pores in the membrane allow only pure water to pass through. Crossflow allows the membrane to clean itself. As the fluid passes through the membrane some of it continues downstream, sweeping the contaminants away from the membrane.

Portable reverse osmosis units are gravity powered and need neither a pump nor electricity. The water is pushed through the filters due to the pressure of gravity.

As reverse osmosis systems are more sophisticated than other types of filters, they are significantly more expensive. Another drawback to using them is that at least two gallons of tap water is wasted for every useable gallon that is filtered.

Is it Reverse Osmosis Water Safe To Drink?

Reverse osmosis water is perfectly safe to drink. There is also a scientific explanation as to why this type of purified water is actually better for you than water that contains high mineral (TDS) content. Water with a high TDS count of over 50 ppm, actually becomes electrically charged and can conduct very small amounts of electric current.

High TDS water, under the right circumstances, can actually cause a small electric light bulb to become illuminated! Water with high TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) is typically a solution that is lacking in hydrogen molecules. This type of water often causes de-hydration on the cellular level.

Reverse Osmosis water with low TDS on the other hand, has a much lower ability to conduct electrical charges. Typically, RO water is slightly acidic and loaded with positively charged hydrogen (H+) molecules. This type of water has been scientifically proven to provide superior hydration at the cellular level.

What's the Difference Between Conventional Water Filtration and Reverse Osmosis?

A conventional filtration system, such as that in a refrigerator for instance, will give you nice tasting water, but it will not remove Total Dissolved Solids, such as, SODIUM, MANGANESE, CALCIUM CARBONATE, to name a few, that are present in most municipal tap and well waters.

Residential reverse osmosis systems typically incorporate a combination of conventional filtration to remove sediment and other solids, followed by activated carbon adsorption for the removal of organic compounds, chlorine, pesticides and VOC's, prior to the reverse osmosis membrane.

The end result is as close to distilled water quality as you can get, with virtually no energy consumption. The typical household water line pressure of 40 psi is all the energy that is required to make the RO system work.

Single Stage or Multi Stage?

The Reverse Osmosis (RO) Membrane is generally TFC which is very susceptible to chlorine attack, therefore this chlorine must be removed from the water using a carbon filter and as we know it is good practice to use a more inexpensive sediment filter to protect the carbon filter. This leads to three stages being required for most systems.

STAGE 1 - Sediment Filter to remove silt and sand (protects stage 2 carbon filter)

STAGE 2 - Carbon Filter to remove chlorine and/or chloramines (protects reverse osmosis membrane)

STAGE 3 - Reverse Osmosis Membrane removes organic and inorganic compounds such as Fluoride

So Why Do Some Companies Offer 4 Stage Reverse Osmosis Systems and Even 7 Stage Systems?

An extra stage after the RO membrane is easily explained, the water produced by the system is not very palatable and requires a carbon cartridge to "polish" the water, also reverse osmosis water generally is held in a holding tank where it can pick up odors or even non-harmful bacteria again a fourth stage carbon filter will ensure that the water reaches the tap in pristine condition.

After the fourth stage it becomes a little more difficult to make an argument that more stages are required, it is a fact that reverse osmosis water is slightly acidic therefore the use of an alkalising carbon filter could be justified however there are now carbon filters available which will alkalise the water as well as performing the job of the fourth stage "polishing" filter.

Reverse Osmosis systems are either fitted to a single tap, plumbed into the main water inlet pipe, or available in a portable compact unit, delivering filtered water throughout the house. Reverse osmosis filters are also used by people living in rural areas who do not have access to clean water. They are also used by travelers on long trips to countries where the local water supply is polluted or substandard.

In developing nations, where people die because of drinking bacteria-infested or contaminated water, reverse osmosis water filters can help save lives.

The AquaTru water filter is a really nice all-in-one system that doesn't take up much space and filters out more contaminants than most other countertop units, hence the premium price. It's good to have it at home where it's portable and easily dispenses clean water with a push of a button.
I have spent a lot of money buying bottled water. I figure this will pay for itself in 6 months. The fact that I no longer have to carry gallons and cases of bottled water into the house and fill the recycle bin with plastic is one benefit. The other is it tastes better than bottled water. I compared both side by side and the bottled water tastes funny now. No bad taste at all from this unit.

I have 2 of these AquaTru portable systems at the moment and plan to buy a few for some family members. The filters are easy to replace and not horribly expensive for how long they last.

What needs improving - this system could use a bit larger water reservoir, seems like we are constantly filling, but we use this water for most everything. A parts schematic would be useful so you can repair or replace parts yourself when needed.

Make sure to read the manual before use to avoid issues/problems. I can see that some folks might want to rush the total filtration process - but don't. This is a wonderful appliance when used as instructed.

And make sure you add minerals back into the filtered water, very important.

If you can't install a more traditional under the sink system (e.g., you're a renter), this countertop unit works just as well, it's relatively compact, and it's very easy to use.

Also note that this system is very quiet. The clean water reservoir can be removed and place in the refrigerator. The screen let's you know which filter needs replacement with a lighted display and filter number.

I recommend you get extra clean water tanks (I have 2 extra tanks) as spares or if you have a large household.
